Founder and Host of Firefighter Mentors
Freddie Fernandez has been a longtime friend, mentor, and someone who has had a tremendous influence on my professional career.
Our relationship spans more than three decades, beginning through the longstanding professional relationship between the City of Miami Fire Department and Key Biscayne Fire Rescue. Over the years, we worked together developing firefighters and future officers through promotional assessments, professional development, and leadership preparation.
On a personal level, Freddie was there when I took my first lieutenant's promotional examination more than two decades ago. Remarkably, he was also there on April 30, 2025, my final day as Fire Chief of Key Biscayne.
Throughout those years, I learned a great deal from Freddie, not just about the fire service, but about leadership, overcoming adversity, discipline, and the importance of helping others succeed.
Perhaps even more meaningful were the countless conversations we shared outside the fire service. We talked about life, family, and the importance of standing together through both the celebrations and the difficult times. Those conversations, and the friendship behind them, are truly priceless. I am grateful for Freddie's friendship and the professional guidance he has provided throughout my career.
Having Freddie as my first guest on Firefighter Mentors was particularly meaningful. Our conversation reflects the very reason I started this project: to share the experiences and lessons of those who have influenced our lives and careers so that others can benefit from them.
